Connect your YouTube channel
Link your channel once and Podato reads its numbers every day, next to your episodes.
Connect your YouTube channel once and Podato reads its numbers every day: every upload, your channel's daily views and watch time, your subscribers, and how each episode's video did in its first week and month.
Open Analytics
Choose Analytics in the sidebar. At the top of the page, next to Import analytics, is a switch labelled Connect YouTube. (You can also connect from Imports in the sidebar, on the YouTube card.)
Turn on the switch
Turn on Connect YouTube, then choose Connect YouTube in the box that opens. Google opens and asks which account to use.
Pick the account that owns the channel
If your channel belongs to a Brand Account, pick the Brand Account, not your own name. Google then asks for two permissions, one to see your channel and one to read its analytics. Leave both ticked. Podato can only read: it can't upload, edit or delete anything.
Wait for the first sync
Google sends you back to Imports, where the YouTube card shows your channel and First sync in progress. Reload the page in a few minutes. When the card says Last synced with a count of matched episodes, it's done, and the switch on Analytics reads YouTube connected.
What happens next
Podato checks your channel once a day. The YouTube card on Imports says when it last did, and how many videos it matched to episodes, how many are unmatched, and how many are Shorts. Choose Show videos on the card to list every upload with what Podato made of it: Episode, Short, Unmatched or Skipped.
- The Analytics page. YouTube's numbers appear beside your podcast numbers in red: views and average view time in the top cards, an On YouTube row with impressions and subscribers gained, a YouTube line under Listening over time, and a YouTube row for each episode in the leaderboard. See how your episodes are doing explains each part.
- Episodes. Each full-length video is matched to its episode by title. If you approved a YouTube title in the episode's write-up, Podato looks for that title first, then the episode's own. Matched episodes get a YouTube section on their Performance tab, with YouTube's own numbers: views and impressions in the first 7 days, views in the first 30 days, and lifetime views, average percentage viewed and average view duration. A first-week or first-month total only appears once the whole period is in.
- Shorts are listed on the card but never matched to an episode.
- Unmatched videos (ones whose title Podato couldn't pair with an episode) wait in the Unmatched episodes list at the top of Imports. Choose Assign episode to pick the episode, or Skip if the video isn't one. A video you assign gets its numbers with the next sync.
YouTube numbers sit next to your downloads, never added to them. A view and a download are different things.
Your views and watch time come in for the last two years. Impressions (how often YouTube showed your thumbnail) only go back 30 days before you connected, because that's all YouTube keeps for a new connection.
Disconnect
Turn off YouTube connected at the top of Analytics (or choose Disconnect on the YouTube card in Imports), then choose Disconnect YouTube. Podato deletes every YouTube number it stored for the show and removes its access from that Google account, unless something else in Podato still uses the account, such as your calendar connection. You can connect again any time.
Anyone on the show's team can connect or disconnect YouTube. If the teammate who connected it deletes their Podato account, the connection and the YouTube numbers go with it, and the show's owner gets an email. Connect again to bring them back. You can also remove Podato from your Google account permissions. Podato then stops updating, the card asks you to reconnect, and if you don't, it deletes the YouTube numbers within 30 days.
If something goes wrong
- "That Google account has no YouTube channel." You picked your own account, but the channel belongs to a Brand Account. Turn on the switch again and pick the Brand Account.
- "Podato needs both YouTube permissions." A permission was unticked on Google's screen. Connect again and leave both ticked.
- The card says Podato lost access, or the last sync failed. Open Imports, choose Reconnect on the YouTube card and sign in to the same account.
